Watch spectacular aerial fireworks display unfold each Independence Day evening over the Iowa Great Lakes.  West Okoboji is the place to be on the 4th, just after 10:00, off from the Arnolds Park Amusement Park. Hundreds of spectator boats with their red, white, and green running lights crowd the lakes each July 4th to enjoy the celebration.

Cayler Prairie - If you wish to see a historic virgin prairie, be sure to visit Cayler Prairie State Botanical Preserve, located five miles west of West Okoboji. An example of increasingly rare virgin prairie grassland; a unique outdoor laboratory. The 160 acre prairie is a National Natural Landmark and among the finest remaining examples of Iowa’s historic landscape, ranging from dry to wet prairie and marsh.

The City of West Okoboji is located in Dickinson County, the smallest county in land area, the county is named in honor of Daniel S. Dickinson, a lawyer and senator from New York. The community is nestled between Arnolds Park and Wahpeton.  At one time, West Okoboji and Wahepton were the same town, but separated in September of 1930.

West Okoboji’s mayor, Howard Titterington,  has served for approximately 60 years.

Water sports on West Lake Okoboji range from sailing to scuba diving and from swimming to water skiing. Sandy beaches invite all to spend lazy afternoons by the shore and in the swimming areas. For the more daring, wind surfing and parasailing provide more opportunities for excitement.
